Iced Mocha – Kennywood

By | August 1, 2017

Since 1898, Kennywood park has been delighting children and exhausting their parents. As the kids spend their day racing from one fantastic ride another, parents struggle to keep up, opting for a seat on the nearest bench instead of the newest inverted spinning attraction. Let’s face it, there is no way for an adult to keep up with a child being fueled by ice cream, pop, and ICEE refills.

At least there WASN’T a way to keep up until this year. This season saw the addition of an espresso bar added right where parents need it most: Kiddieland. Like other parents, the thought sipping a bit of caffeine to recharge while the little ones ran free brought joy to my heart.

The menu offers standard coffee shop fare, but in a place completely devoid of coffee, the offerings are perfect. Hot and iced drinks provide some solid options depending on the temperature and time of year your party heads to the park.

On a scorchy day in July, I opted for an iced mocha to taste test the establishment. After placing my order, I noticed that a team of teens started work on my beverage by discussing the recipe, gathering ingredients, and carefully adding dark chocolate and milk to the cup. The addition of the espresso remains a mystery, though.  From what I could see, there are no freshly ground beans or tamping involved in this drink. Instead, there is a large square machine that seems to offer espresso-on-demand.

When my order was complete, I met it with skepticism. It looked good, but could an amusement park location offer up a solid coffee drink? My fears alleviated after the first sip. Milk. Sweet but not too sweet. The strong coffee flavor pulling through. Kennywood managed to put together a fine mocha in the back of Kiddieland.

So, next time you’re at the best amusement park east of the Mississippi, order yourself an iced mocha from Snack-A-Saurus, enjoy it on the closest bench, and then hit the ground running. See if the kids can keep up.

Consume.Review.Repeat. gives the iced mocha at Snack-A-Saurus in Kennywood 8.9 wooden coasters out of 10.
