Crisis Issue #4

As I’ve been re-reading Crisis on Infinite Earths, I have come to appreciate how rich the DC Universe was of characters and worlds. Now, not every character and world was appealing (such as Lord Volt and his Earth) and therefore their ends are not morned. Regardless, the amount of characters that die and worlds that end is monumental.

In this issue, we witness the end of Lord Volt and his Earth. The only one that survives is Lady Quark who is saved by Pariah. I think this is the first time we see Pariah saving someone who is about to meet their end. I couldn’t help but wonder why Pariah hasn’t been doing this all along. Usually, he witnesses the world and everyone in it meet their end.

Elsewhere, the Monitor successfully creates a new Dr. Light by directing an “ion based energy ray” at the bitchiest Japanese scientist I have ever read. At this point, it’s not clear why the Monitor created Mrs. Dr. Light.

The Anti-Monitor is up to no good as he captures the Red Tornado to serve a part in his plan. For what purpose, is unknown.

As our heroes on Earth-2 battle the shadows, the Monitor explains to Pariah that Earth-1 and Earth-2 are doomed. Right after the Monitor explains all, BLAM! Harbinger kills the Monitor. Up until this point, Harbinger has been going back and forth as to whether or not she was going to kill the Monitor. If you remember, she was possessed by one of the Anti-Monitor’s shadows so her killing the Monitor was not too unexpected.

The issue ends with Earth-1 and Earth-2 exploding into dust leaving the impression that everyone has perished. This was another decent issue. The writing comes across a bit dated at times but the story remains pretty strong. The art continues to stand the test of time and appears better than some on the stands today. Consume. Review. Repeat. gives Crisis on Infinite Earths #4 a 7 out of 10 exploding Earths.
