A Lamborghini + dinosaurs + karate + a Nintendo Power Glove = pure 80s/90s awesomeness titled Kung Fury. David Sandberg, who directed, wrote, and starred in Kung Fury is masterfully talented and his movie is totally bodacious, dude. It was everything I hoped it would be – and more.
Remember when Nerf released the foam football called the Turbo and it made you feel like a football god as you bombed it 200+ yards? Remember your freaking amazement when they stuck a whistle in it and called it the Screamer? Well, David Sandberg jammed as much 80s/90s goodness as he could into 30 minutes, put a whistle in it, and launched that bitch like a missile for a YouTube touchdown.
Kung Fury is the prime example of the gnarly power of Kickstarter. Without the help of Kickstarter supporters, this movie may have never been made. I remember after watching the trailer on Kickstarter, I wanted to make it rain hundreds from my PayPal account in support of it. Why? Because it absolutely looked legit.
Make no mistake; Kung Fury is the real deal – its not some poorly executed fan film. The special effects and animation (yes, animation) make it look and feel just as it should – a well-worn VCR tape of your favorite movie from your childhood.
Kung Fury is escapism at its finest. Full of gratuitous, over-the-top action and adventure, it’s the perfect Friday night movie to help you forget about your week. In some weird twisted way this movie channeled the best of Double Dragon, Transformers, He-Man, Back to the Future, Knight Rider, and oddly enough…the TV show Dinosaurs. When watching this movie expect the unexpected.
Although this movie wasn’t totally perfect, it far exceeded my expectations. From start to finish (ending with a theme song sung by none other than David “Cheeseburger” Hasselhoff) this movie was a thing of beauty. I have a feeling we will be seeing more of Kung Fury in the future, and the future will be better for it. Consume. Review. Repeat. gives Kung Fury an eight out of ten roundhouses to the face.
