The beans, the grind, the brew, and the roast: These are the essential elements of a cup of coffee. The best cups balance all four elements in a blissful state of harmony while the messing up just one can throw your joe into a tailspin.
It’s no lie that Starbucks has never been my favorite stop for espresso and espresso-based drinks. The roast was always the problem for me.
One of the biggest complaints you hear about Starbucks is: There coffee always tastes burnt. Although there are several reasons for this, it usually comes down to the dark roasts rather than the brewing process.
So, in their wisdom, Starbucks listens to their customers’ comments and criticisms. Blonde roast is a light roast alternative to the darker, traditional Starbucks roast.
Blonde roast at Starbucks is nothing new, of course. The option has been available for years as long as you’re buying standard drip coffee.
We espresso fans have been getting by with only dark roasts until now. Recently Starbucks introduced a blonde roast espresso, which means your favorite lattes, flat whites, cappuccinos, and macchiatos can get highlights and be blonde for a while.
For my introduction to the change, I opted for a blonde vanilla latte, an item prominently featured in the promotion for blonde roast. After one sip, I totally get it.
The vanilla, 2% milk, and blonde roast espresso blend together to produce a drink with lighter, brighter taste and feel. After two sips, I felt fairly confident I would never again get a standard espresso drink from Starbucks.
Some of you might resist the blonde roast. Maybe you think there is less caffeine or it doesn’t really taste like the Starbucks you know and love. To the first point, blonde roasts offer the same caffeine content as dark, and in some cases, they carry more caffeine.
Secondly, yes! This does taste differently from the Starbucks you know and love. It tastes much, much better. Try something new. Live a little.
I don’t know if blondes really have more fun, but I had fun drinking this blonde and imagine I will be drinking many more in days to come.
