It was only seventeen issues ago that we were introduced to “a new beginning” with Magna’s group coming in contact with the society Rick established subsequent to the events of All Out War. Things were good; walkers were getting led away from civilization, trading was going on between communities, and most of everyone’s time was spent getting ready for a fair. A FAIR in TWD? Who would have thunk it?
Although it wasn’t very Walking Dead-ish, it was interesting to see how everyone was adjusting to a somewhat normal life. Amazingly, Rick’s people were starting to become happy in a post-apocalyptic world. But, leave it to young love to ruin it all.
In this issue, Rick and Alpha spar verbally as to what it takes to survive in a world where the dead walk. Alpha has taken the approach that you need to be animalistic to survive whereas Rick has chosen to try and survive by recreating society. Neither can convince the other that their way is the right way, and it is ultimately decided that they should avoid each other. The decision to avoid each other is not decided amicably though (more on that in a minute).
While Rick is a POW of the Whispers, he learns that Alpha allows Lydia to get raped by the other members of Alpha’s group because…that’s what animals do. Yeah, like I said, Alpha is bat-shit crazy.
Alpha becomes disgusted by her daughter’s weakness (being upset that her mom allows her to get raped) and basically banishes Lydia from the Whispers to live with Rick and Carl. Carl’s pumped by the news because he saved his love from her bald, dead skin wearing mom. Awwwwwww, how cute.
Rick on the other hand, or hook (however you look at it) doesn’t realize such a happy ending by the end of this issue. Remember how I said that Alpha and Rick agreed to avoid each other? Well, Alpha marked the edge of her territory that shouldn’t be crossed by Rick and his people with a row of spikes with heads on them. But not just any heads, the heads of Rick’s people; such as, Magna, Ken, ROSITA, EZEKIEL, and others!
You know that Rick isn’t going to let Alpha get away with what she did. I predict that a war is going to break out between Rick’s people and the Whispers, and while it’s going on, Negan is going to break loose and kill…Andrea. Just a prediction but I could see it happening.
Consume. Review. Repeat. gives TWD #144 a nine out of ten severed heads.
